Hugely disappointing. I loved the first two in the series even if they were unoriginal and sorta silly. But this was like something from another dimension. Where oh where to begin. It's another 20 years since the 2nd book and our detectives have undergone rejuvenation procedures so they're young and sexy again.Our hero is an alien social justice warrior blathering about race, gender preference and poverty and, oh, he has just been elected the president of South African, now the world's leader. The evil West is up to no good and of course it makes less than zero sense. The "humans mistreat nice aliens" story has been told often and almost always, far better. Every point, long speech or scolding has all the nuance of a jackhammer on high.But these are misdemeanors. The felony is the story - it BORES. The reader quickly tires of the non-stop nonaction as parts of the first two books are copied and pasted here - chase scenes, secret meetings, the sermonizing, the "will they or won't they" relationship. The reliance on DUNE was obvious - the passing of memories from one generation to the other, a special drug, a Messiah from another world. The same problems in the first books are here in spades - a race with magical technology allows puny humans to control them. And then there's ANOTHER "secret" organization, this time revengeful Aliens. Just awful. I think I would need to read this one again, to follow it better.What I liked best was the world-building, if I'm using that term correctly. This was well written, to give me a sense of a place and its people, as a background against which a jig saw puzzle of a plot takes place. It rhymes with our current situation of a world where demagogues have used much of the population's dislike of change to increase xenophobic passions, and the seemingly insurmountable inequality we see around us. The basic question this novel is about is, what's the best way forward for a world with billions of humans and a few thousand, highly advanced ancient Earthlings with a technology and abilities that can bring the Earth and all its inhabitants to a future far , far sooner than human beings could achieve by themselves. Thus, two levels of story are told here. Set against that larger picture is the mystery of an assassination, and the reasons and perpetrators behind it.This guy is a good and interesting writer.
